Where to Put a Student Driver Sticker on Your Car

The best place for a student driver sticker is low on the rear window or on the trunk lid, close to the center, where the driver behind you is already looking. Add a second one on the bumper or a rear side window if you want to be seen from more angles.

A reusable sticker makes the spot easy to get right: you can lift it and try again, and take it off between lessons.

The best spots, in order

  1. Rear window, lower center or a lower corner. The driver behind you looks straight at it. Keep it low enough that it doesn't block your view in the rearview mirror, and clear of the rear wiper and the third brake light.
  2. Trunk lid or tailgate. A good choice on SUVs and hatchbacks with a steep rear window. Many of these panels are plastic or aluminum, so use a sticker rather than a magnet here.
  3. Rear bumper. Easy to reach and easy to move. Pick a flat, smooth spot.
  4. Rear side windows. A useful second sticker for drivers passing you or waiting beside you at a light. One warning: if that window rolls down, the seal scrapes across the sticker every time. Use fixed side glass if the car has it, such as the small quarter window, or keep that window up while the sticker is on.

Places to avoid

  • Anywhere that blocks your view out of the car
  • Over the rear wiper path or the third brake light
  • Textured, dirty or freshly waxed surfaces, where nothing sticks well
  • Behind dark tinted glass, if you use a window cling on the inside: no one can see it through the tint

How to put it on so it comes off clean

  1. Wash and dry the spot. Dust and road grime are the main reason a reusable sticker loses its grip.
  2. Peel off the backing and place the sticker from the middle out.
  3. Smooth out any air with the flat of your hand.
  4. To take it off, lift a corner and peel slowly. It comes off clean and is ready to use again.

Store it on its backing sheet between uses, and always apply it to a clean spot. Dust that gets on the sticky side stays there.

Sticker, magnet or window cling?

Magnets only hold on steel, and many bumpers and tailgates are plastic or aluminum. Window clings go on the inside of the glass and need clear or lightly tinted windows. We compare all three in Student Driver Magnet, Sticker or Window Cling.
