Where to Get a Student Driver Sticker

Most families buy a student driver sign online, where you can choose between stickers, magnets and window clings in different sizes and pack counts. Before you order, check whether your state has a rule of its own.

Does your state give you one?

Most states do not require a student driver sticker on a private car. New Jersey is the exception many parents hear about: drivers under 21 with a permit or a probationary license must display a small red reflective decal on the front and rear license plates. The decals are sold at New Jersey motor vehicle agencies for $4 a pair, and they are separate from any student driver sign you choose to use. Details are on the New Jersey MVC site.

Rules change, so check your own state's DMV.

Where to buy one

  • Online. The widest choice of sizes, styles and packs, delivered to your door.
  • Local stores. Some stores carry student driver magnets, but stock varies, so call ahead.

What to look for

  • Big enough to read. A driver a few car lengths back should be able to read it.
  • Sticks to your car. A magnet needs steel. Many bumpers, tailgates and trunk lids are plastic or aluminum, and a magnet will not hold there.
  • Comes off clean. Look for a removable adhesive that is safe on paint and glass.
  • Enough of them. A 2-pack covers the rear window and the bumper. A 4-pack covers two family cars.

Where ours fit in

We make reusable, removable student driver stickers here in the USA, 10.5 x 4 inches, in 2- and 4-packs. We also make window clings for the inside of the glass, and new driver stickers for the months after the license.

Next: where to put it
